Situational Awareness
See threats before they become dangers
💡 What is Situational Awareness?
Knowing what's happening around you at all times. It's not paranoia—it's paying attention. Most victims are chosen because they appear distracted or unaware.
WHITE
Unaware
Head down, phone out, earbuds in. Easy target.
YELLOW
Relaxed Alert
Aware of surroundings. This is your goal!
RED
High Alert
Specific threat identified. Ready to act.
👀 What to Observe
🚪
Exits
Always know 2 ways out of any building or room
👥
People
Who's around you? Anyone paying unusual attention to you?
🚗
Vehicles
Occupied parked cars, slow-moving vehicles following
🌑
Environment
Dark areas, hiding spots, isolated locations
Anomalies
Anything that feels "off" or out of place
📱 The Phone Problem
Looking at your phone = "Condition White" = easy target. When walking, keep phone in pocket. If you must use it, step aside with your back to a wall and scan periodically.
✈️
Travel Safety
Stay safe whether local or abroad
🚶 Walking Safety
💡
Stay in well-lit areas
Avoid shortcuts through dark alleys, parks at night, or isolated areas
👫
Use the buddy system
Walk with others when possible, especially at night
🎧
One earbud out
Keep at least one ear free to hear your surroundings
🔑
Keys ready
Have keys in hand before reaching your car or door
🚗 Driving & Parking
🅿️
Park smart
Well-lit areas near entrances. Back into spot for quick exit.
👀
Check before entering
Look in back seat before getting in your car
🔒
Lock immediately
Lock doors as soon as you get in, before starting car
Gas station awareness
Lock car while pumping. Don't leave purse/wallet visible.
🌍 Traveling Abroad
• Research destination safety before you go
• Register with your country's embassy
• Keep copies of passport separate from original
• Don't flash expensive jewelry, electronics, or cash
• Learn basic phrases: "Help," "Police," "Hospital"
• Know the local emergency number (it's not always 911)
🚕 Rideshare Safety
• Verify driver, car, and license plate BEFORE getting in
• Share trip details with someone you trust
• Sit in back seat, behind passenger side
• If something feels wrong, ask to be let out immediately
🤝
De-escalation Techniques
Defuse conflict before it becomes violence
🎯 Goal: Create Distance & Exit
The goal isn't to "win" a confrontation—it's to get away safely. Your ego isn't worth your life. Give up your wallet. Let them have the parking spot. Nothing you own is worth fighting over.
1
Stay Calm
Take slow breaths. Speak slowly and quietly. Calm is contagious—so is panic.
2
Create Space
Keep at least arm's length distance. Angle your body (don't square up). Position yourself near an exit.
3
Use Non-Threatening Body Language
Hands visible and open (not fists). Avoid direct staring. Don't point or gesture aggressively.
4
Listen & Acknowledge
"I hear you." "I understand you're upset." People want to be heard—sometimes that's all it takes.
5
Offer Options
"How can we fix this?" Give them a face-saving way out. Let them feel like they won.
6
Exit When Possible
As soon as you can safely leave, do so. Don't linger to prove a point.
🚫 What NOT to Do
• Don't insult, mock, or challenge
• Don't invade their space
• Don't turn your back until safe
• Don't escalate with "What are you gonna do about it?"
• Don't make sudden movements
• Don't fight over property—give it up
💰 The Mugger's Wallet
Some people carry a "mugger's wallet" with $20-40 cash and expired cards. If robbed, throw it away from you and run the opposite direction. They want the money, not you.
🚨
Emergency Response
When prevention fails, know what to do
🏃 Run, Hide, Fight
RUN: If safe escape exists, take it. Don't wait for others. Leave belongings.

HIDE: If you can't run, hide. Lock/barricade door. Silence phone. Stay quiet.

FIGHT: Last resort only. Commit fully. Use improvised weapons. Attack vulnerable areas (eyes, throat, groin).
📞 Calling for Help
📱
911 - Emergencies
Police, fire, ambulance. Works even without cell service.
📲
Emergency SOS
iPhone: Hold side + volume. Android: Press power 5x rapidly.
📍
Share Location
Set up location sharing with trusted contacts in advance.
🗣️
Bystander Help
Point at someone specific: "YOU in the red shirt, call 911!"
🆘 If You're Being Followed
• Don't go home (reveals where you live)
• Head to a busy, well-lit public place
• Enter a store and tell staff you need help
• Call 911 while walking
• If driving, don't stop—drive to police station
• Make noise and draw attention
✋ Trust Your Gut
If something feels wrong, it probably is. Your instincts evolved over thousands of years to keep you alive. Don't ignore them to be "polite." It's okay to:
• Cross the street
• Change direction
• Leave a situation
• Say "no" without explanation
