Children learn about money long before anyone teaches them. They see a parent pay at the register, hear that something is "too expensive," and wonder why the store owner does not just keep all the money. What they rarely see is the other side of the counter: the rent, the wages, the slow weeks, and the bills that arrive whether customers came or not.
Open for Business: The Main Street Game puts your family on the other side of that counter. It is a free board game from Global Sovereign University that runs in your web browser, with no download, no account, and no cost.
How it plays
Up to four people can play on one screen, taking turns, or a child can play against the computer. Each player starts with $3,000 and rolls one die to move around Main Street. Land on an empty shop, and you may open it: a food truck, a barber shop, a bakery, a print shop, a laundromat, a café, a repair shop, a bookstore, or a hardware store. Each has its own setup cost, rent, payroll and typical monthly sales.
Every time a player passes the start square, they close the month. Their shops report sales, and the player pays rent and payroll for each one. Land on another player's shop, and you become their customer: you pay them, and they earn. Choose a 6-month game for a short evening or a 12-month game for a longer one.
What children actually learn
Sixteen surprise cards, sixteen conversations
The surprise cards are where the best family conversations start. Each card has an event and a one-line lesson: a storm breaks a window, the landlord raises the rent, a competitor opens nearby, a big catering order arrives, a tax bill comes due. When a card is drawn, pause and ask your child a simple question: What could the owner have done to be ready for that?
A short game fits easily into an evening. The conversations it starts can last much longer.
Tips for parents
Keep going.
If your family enjoys it, try Checkers with a Purpose, where a player must answer a question about money, reading, math, or civics to jump or be crowned. Homeschooling families will find more free classes, lesson plans, and a printable week planner on the Homeschool hub and in the free guide The Kitchen-Table Campus.
Global Sovereign University is a tuition-free 501(c)(3) nonprofit. Start a family game of Open for Business tonight.
