How to Read This Book
The Practical Framework Card · Keep Going · About the Author
This is a comic book with a serious job. Each of its sixteen pages carries one chapter of Surprise Is Constant: The Science of Uncertainty and the Art of Staying Steady, by Dr. Gene A Constant, told in three panels and one line at the bottom.
Read each page twice. First, look at the pictures and let the story land. Then read the facing page, which tells you what the panels show, the idea behind them, and one small thing to try tonight. A code on every facing page opens that chapter’s free lesson at Global Sovereign University, where you can go deeper and even earn a certificate.
You will meet a few travelers: commuters on a train, a worker at a desk, a hiker with a paper map. Their days do not go as planned. Neither will yours. That is the point. Surprise is constant. Staying steady is a skill, and like any skill it can be learned.
A gyroscope stays upright because it keeps moving. A bicycle balances only while its wheels turn. Neither one is still, and neither one falls.
This book is about that kind of balance: not the stability of a world that never changes, but the steadiness of a person who can move with it.
“The map is not the territory. Surprise is constant.”

A commuter sips coffee on a Tuesday-morning train. The train stops without warning, and a message flashes on her phone. In the last panel the window cracks open onto a mountain landscape she never planned to see.
A surprise is what happens when your inner model meets a fact it did not contain. Expectations fail because no model holds everything, and hindsight makes the miss look obvious afterward. The answer is not to predict harder but to hold expectations loosely enough to update them.
Name one thing you expected today that did not happen. Say what your model left out, without blaming yourself for it.
