About this pillar
Vocabulary is the inventory of words a reader knows — and the depth at which they know each. Comprehension is gated by vocabulary; you cannot understand a sentence in which 25% of the words are unfamiliar. The Matthew Effect in reading operates through vocabulary as much as through any other channel. This pillar walks learners through the Beck-McKeown-Kucan three-tier framework: Bronze builds Tier 1 mastery (everyday vocabulary with precision); Silver builds Tier 2 academic vocabulary (the cross-domain workhorses of educated discourse); Gold builds morphological awareness (roots, prefixes, suffixes — the vocabulary multipliers); Platinum builds Tier 3 domain vocabulary plus the active habit of vocabulary growth; Apostle builds vocabulary alongside another learner. Grounded in Beck, McKeown, and Kucan's "Bringing Words to Life," Marzano's six-step vocabulary instruction process, and the research on morphological awareness as a vocabulary multiplier. No one reads alone.
