The Rung You Are Standing On

Nobody climbs a ladder from the bottom. Everybody starts wherever they happen to be standing. This card asks you to say where that is — honestly, anonymously, and in about ninety seconds.

You are not being tested and you are not being graded. There is no good rung and no bad rung. A person on rung eight is not further along in life than a person on rung one; they are simply held up by something different.

The ten rungs

1. I cannot read well enough to learn what I want to learn.
2. I can read, but I have no proof anybody accepts.
3. I could learn, but not alone — and I cannot afford a teacher.
4. I have no reliable power, signal, or device.
5. I could learn, but I do not know what is worth learning.
6. I know a subject, but I have never actually done it.
7. I can do the work, but nobody will hire someone with no history.
8. I earn, but I cannot fix or keep anything I own.
9. I am independent, but I have no way to trade what I have.
10. I can do this — and nobody has learned it from me yet.

Read them slowly. Most people recognise themselves in one immediately.

No account, no email, no names. The record counts rungs, never people. Nobody has ever measured where people actually are on this climb, or what stops them most — not a government, not a university, not anyone. That count starts with you.
