The Art and Mechanics of Barter, the full GSU field manual on honorable exchange, is being forged in the GSU press now, and it is the most complete thing we have ever written on the subject.
What the manual covers
- The Art — the human half: etiquette, negotiation with radical respect, reading a fair deal, the ceremonies of proposing and closing, and the reputation ledger that no currency can buy.
- The Mechanics — the structural half: valuation with honest measuring sticks, beating the double coincidence of wants, triangular trades, timebanks and hour-equality, written ledgers, and scaling a favor into a neighborhood system.
- The Drills — practice scenarios for kitchen tables, families, swap days, and hard times, so the skills are muscle before they are needed.
