English print is a code — an imperfect, magnificent, learnable code that maps roughly forty-four speech sounds onto twenty-six letters and their teams. Phonics is simply the systematic teaching of that code, and after decades of reading wars the evidence has settled where common sense always stood: readers who are taught the code explicitly outperform readers left to guess at it. Guessing from pictures and context is not reading. It is coping — and coping collapses the year the pictures disappear.
What explicit phonics actually looks like
- One pattern at a time: short a, then consonant blends, then the silent-e flip that turns cap into cape.
- Sounds before exceptions: master the regular before touring the irregular. English is far more lawful than its reputation.
- Reading and spelling as one skill: encoding (spelling the sound) and decoding (sounding the spelling) are the same map traveled in both directions.
- Practice to automaticity: the code must run without conscious effort before fluency can exist. Games do this better than drills — which is why GSU built one.
A child taught the code owns every word ever printed. A child taught to guess owns only the words someone happened to show them.
